HOW COACHING WORKS

COACHING VS THERAPY

What is neurodiversity coaching — and how is it different from therapy?

  • Focuses on where you are now and where you want to get to
  • Builds practical strategies grounded in how your brain works
  • Draws on neurobiology, continual professional development, supervision, lived experience, and ICF PCC coaching
  • No diagnosis needed — works with you wherever you are
  • Goal-shaped and paced around what works for you
  • Explores past experiences and their impact on the present
  • Focuses on emotional healing and mental health conditions
  • Delivered by a trained mental health professional
  • May involve diagnosis, assessment, or clinical formulation
  • Can be longer-term and open-ended in structure

This is one of the questions I'm asked most often. Coaching and therapy are both valuable but they do different things.

What happens when you work with Dr Alexa Smith

01

Discovery call

A free 45 - minute conversation with no commitment. We talk about what's going on for you, I explain how I work, and we both get a sense of whether this feels like the right fit. If it doesn't, I'll say so honestly.

02

We shape it together

If we decide to work together, we shape the coaching around your goals, your pace, and how you work best. Sessions are online — typically an hour, every two to three weeks — though we adjust this to suit you.

03

Clarity and momentum

Each session builds self-understanding, practical tools, and a clearer sense of what's next. Most clients notice a real shift in how much energy they stop spending on fighting their own brain.

THE PROCESS

Three straightforward steps — nothing hidden, nothing complicated.

Sessions are on line

All coaching takes place via Teams. No travel, no waiting rooms.

Session length and frequency

Typically one hour, every two to three weeks — but shaped around what works for you and your goals.

No diagnosis required

You don't need a formal diagnosis of ADHD, autism, AuDHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia to work with me. Many clients come without one.

Confidential

Everything we discuss is confidential, in line with ICF ethical guidelines and UK GDPR. I hold regular supervision to support the quality of my work.
